Works of 2019

4 years ago, when I was 18, my mother confessed in our living room, I was born by homologous artificial insemination with longed for by both parents.

At that moment I realized the reason why my parents brought me up so affectionately.

When I had menarche, my mother got so delighted while it was so unpleasant experience for me. My grandmother added  “ I can`t wait to see my grandchild`s face”. This might have suggested that I was expected to have a baby as soon as possible, because I was born after long infertility treatment of my parents.

They may even worrying about if I can have a child. But I was not sure if I even want my baby or not.

I wonder if my parents expect me to have the required treatment if it should turn out that I cannot have a child.

Knowing the fact that  I was born by artificial insemination, I started studying on “Artificial lives”.  The first cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep was as old as me. Although Dolly couldn`t have lived long, the cloned ones from her cells were different. It was proved that Dolly died only due to the epidemic leg disease. Her children also grew up healthily.

After a while I saw Osanai Michiko`s interview in a TV program. Ms.Osanai suffers from cerebral palsy and has been in an electric wheelchair.

One day her mother tried to forced her to be sterilized. However she said “If I still have chances, I will not give up ” and refused it. As a result she finally had a child. And then working as a writer and brought her child up with making her child drink milk by her feet. Now she even has a grandchild.

Ms.Osanai, then, launched “Sapporo Ichigo Kai(Sapporo strawberry association)” , the project for independent lives of disabled people. Ichigo kai functions as a place to meet people and to support disabled people live by themselves when they have their own child.

The Eugenic Protection Law which forced disabled people to be sterilized was abolished in Japan very recently and it was coincidentally the year when I was born, 1996.

The fact that the event that I have interested in happened in the year when I was born seems something fateful for me.Then I traveled to Scotland where Dolly had been born and Sapporo where Osanai Michiko lives.

Some manipulations force a person to be sterilized and Others enable a person to have a child. Some technologies like cloning are developed to create the next generation and others force some people to be sterilized through nations` policy.

The technique that is used to show animation by a revolving device  at the center of exhibition is called Zoetrope.

I created an animation artwork with awkward primitive method that represents various hopes and desires around us who continuously create another generation ,in some cases, by awkward artificial ways.
